So many kinds of pole, rods, system….. how dose anyone know what is best for their style of FLY FISHING?? Moreover dose it matter than the fly and presentation?

I thought fishing for wild trout was hard enough!! Trying to learn and understand what is truth verves…… Marketing, PR, and BS is far to hard for me!!

Is anything true or really make any differences? What Fly rod and line i.e. balanced system is good for small trout on small rivers?

Fly Fishing: Fly fishing rods are thin, long, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but mostly from man-made materials. As their name indicates, fly rods are designed to cast a fly (or flea as our mentor used to say). Instead of a weighted fishing lure, a fly rod uses the weight of the fly line for casting, and lightweight rods can cast the very smallest fly (or flea). Fly rods tend to have a single, large diameter line guide, with a number of smaller looped guides placed along the fishing rod to help control the movement of the thick fly line.

A complete system from Cortland or Scientific Anglers in a 4weight or 5weight is what your looking for. Rod, reel, line and backing are all included. All the rods in those systems are designed to be of a medium action that allow for all types of casting styles and abilities. The only thing I would look for is that the rod is 8′. Any shorter and the ability to load the rod while casting becomes difficult.

I’m looking for some non-guided trout streams to fly fish in either (or very close to) Roanoke or Charlottesville. Please post web links to stream information if possible!

Here is a good website that offers links to many Virginia and West Virginia fly fishing related events and businesses. Just click on Virginia and start working your way down the links, some of them offer fishing reports, hatch charts and the like. You should be able to come up with some decent info from them. If you find an area you are really interested in, then give the fly shop a call and have a long talk with them about the rivers in their area.

http://virginiaonthefly.com/

For instance, if you go to Mossey Creek and scroll down to where it says Local Information and Fish Stories, they give a synopsis of a many of the creeks in their area.

http://www.mossycreek.com/

If you spend some time taking an in-depth look at all of these links you will gain a ton of info about the area. I spent some time checking them out and it makes me want to head east to Virginia. Great looking country!

Hope you have a great fishing trip/

My 40th birthday is approaching (rapidly) and I have been given an opportunity to travel to any part of the continental US for a 2 week fly fishing trip either this fall or next spring. I am opening it up here for suggestions. My ideal trip would be one where I could hire a guide for a day or two then fish on my own.

Anyone had any good trips they would recommend?

depending on what style of fishing you want there are way to many places out west to name off that would all fit and be a great experience. as was noted the yellowstone area is a great choice. but there are very good areas, less known but equally as good all over the western US. fall is a great time to fish out west, spring means you could hit runoff conditions but either way there will be decent fishing to be had. I have lived in both colorado and idaho and could fill your itinerary easily with great spots in either state.

Fly fishing in Northern California can be rewarding even for a beginner. The Upper Sac can be productive for trout in early spring with guide Jack Trout & Scott from Trinidad. http://www.jacktrout.com/sacramento-mccloud.html

CALIFORNIA Fly fishing where and on what?

admin on April 26th, 2010

I have some guest from out of the country. Who want to go fly-fishing this August in Califorina. Need to know what flyies, rivers and spots are good and bad this time of year. Would like to ONLY fish RIVERS for TROUT with in, 6 HOURS of LA, like the Kern, King and Merced rivers. Also need info on guides, cabins or motels. Thank you.

If I were you, I would head up to Bishop, California and fly fish in the Bishop Creek. Its a beautiful place to visit. You can also fish the Kern River which is just south of town. If you fish at the river, I would use Power Bait…they really seem to like that. The Bishop creek also has lots of areas where the fish congregate. You could also go 12 miles up 395 to what they call "Intake 2". Its a nice lake where they seem to catch alot of fish.

There are lots of motels and campgrounds around the area!! Plus Bishop has a really neat restaurant called "Whiskey Creek" and they supposedly have really good food from what several of my extended family members have told me.

Have fun!!!!!!!!!!

My boyfriend used to be the fly-fishing guide at the resort where we met. He worked there for two years and lost his job. I really believe he’s amazing for this job. He’s so helpful, patient, and a good instructor, he has so much experience with it and people respect him because they recognize quickly that he knows what he’s talking about. I’m really sad he doesn’t do this anymore. His friend tried to start a guide service but in this state there is no business, so his friend moved to Colorado and is doing great. He didn’t want to leave me for that, so here he is. Does anyone have any experience with this type of job or business and could help?

marketing a place where corporate america wants to travel too in order to recreate and relax by fishing, fly fishing or even try to set a new world record is how people learn about places where fishing is easy even by beginners standards. If fish are in the waters where you want to do this and he already knows his stuff, then what’s missing isn’t your states business it’s enough to do for people to want to go to wherever it is you feel the need to hide it from us. I always thought a bed and breakfast with fishing and spa services available for both men and women would and could be a great way to let couples get away together where he fishes during the day and she moisturizes or exercises or anything (I am not trying to be nor am I being condescending in any way) some couples will fish together and to get a guide service off the ground you have to get writers and editors to come and do the dew so to speak you have to give away freebies and hope he knows his stuff and he can and does get these people involved in and with the best experience they can ever have. That being said then the writers and editors will line up looking for freebies and after three years of good write-ups and stories about your guiding prowess and the unbelievable waters that were fished. you will see people all over the world and from your own home town booking reservations from now till the end of time. So I suggest you go to the library and check out a couple of books about marketing, starting a business, guiding practices and fishing services. But then I am just a marketing person who is well read, writes, cooks and fishes alot, what do I know?
