1) abel fly reels.
2) daiwa baitcasters. particularly TDX series.
3) shimano baitcasters. curado, chronarch and calais.
4) ardent baitcasters. XS1000 can’t be beat.
5) older ambassadeur baitcasters. not the shi…stuff they’re putting out now. a revo is okay but not my pick.
6) shimano spinning reels. the better grades.
7) vintage mitchell spinning reels. l have some 40+ year old work horses.
almost anything by hardy or other british reels. not for any particular reason other than these are a fetish of mine.
9) penn saltwater reels. the older american made ones. conventional and spinning.
10) newell saltwater reels.

what is a good beginner fly fishing reel?
I have a fenwick ff80-3 that my dad gave to me and im looking for a good beginner reel to go with it so i can try fly fishing in about 2 weeks from now, maybe a kit that has some flys with it as well and the string that goes with it. Does anyone know of a good beginner set up i can use.

One important thing to remember about most fly reels (the exception is hard core saltwater reels) is that it is simply a place to keep your line.
I would recommend the Pflueger reels, I have two of them and they work well.
