can i use a fly fishing reel for course fishing?
could i use a flyfishing reel for course fishing, what is the difference between a fly fishing reel and a centre pin reel?
No, a fly reel is for fly fishing. If you prefer to use this kind of reel instead of a fixed spool reel for course fishing, then you need to get yourself a centre pin reel. Centre pin reels are great for float fishing, and in particular trotting on fast moving waters. Check out the Australian made reels Alvey, most of their reels are for sea fishing, however they do have a few that are for general purpose use also, i.e. course fishing. They are generally made from Bakelite and are very reasonably priced, see them at www.sharnbrooktackle.com and search for centre pin reels, the cheapest is the Alvey 40B-L – Beginners Reel for about £21 + vat, and although it is described as a beginners reel, it is also ideal for the experienced casual angler. Centre pin reels can be very expensive, so I would definitely recommend Alvey as they are very reasonably priced, well made and built to last.

Has anyone bought fly fishing gear online?
My father needs a new fly fishing reel – so I was wondering. This one has some good articles and fly reels it looks like http://www.classicflyfishing.com/
I’ve bought quite a lot of fly fishing stuff online, but I’ve never really bought something "blind." That is, I’ve never researched a major purchase online and bought it unless I’ve at least looked at it and handled it in a store. I’ve always picked what I wanted (a rod or reel or whatever) by trying it out first at a store or by borrowing a friend’s, then purchasing online. Online sellers can often offer bigger selections and better prices than brick-and-mortar shops. While I try to support my local retailers, sometimes you’ve got to go online to get what you want at the best price.
I think I’ve looked at classicflyfishing.com a time or two but have never bought anything there. I’ve heard praise for those Hardy reels but they’re a little out of my price range — I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen one. So far I’ve had no trouble catching fish on reels in the $100 price range, but if that’s what your dad wants and you’re going to get him one, all I can say is — you’re a very good son. Heh.

Fly Fishing Reel Proper Line Threading?
I ran a cross a site that appeared to show the fly line should pass underneath (on the outside) of the line protector bar on the botom of the reel. I have always threaded my line so that it passes "inside" the bottom line protector as that seems to provide a more direct path to the first guide on the rod. So, should I feed my fly line "inside" the line protector bar, or on the "outside" of the line protector bar on the fly reel? Thanks for any help.
you have got it right. that is the only way the drag system will work properly and running it around the bottom wil cause abrasion to your fly-line and take years out of it’s life.
