Hi,

New to fly fishing and somewhat baffled by the names and uses of all the flies on offer. Do colour charts exist illustrating flies with their names and intended use?

Thanks.

Fly’s break down into different categories , lets start with Naturals , Nymphs , this is the stage of the life cycle when the fly is in a larval stage ( like a caterpillar would be to a butterfly ) these can be taken by fish anywhere from the lake or river bed right up to the surface.
There are many types of Nymph , Damsel and Mayfly being two of the more often imitated usually with tyings such as Damsel , Pheasant tail , Gold Ribbed Hares Ear , Walkers Mayfly.
Buzzers are another you will come across , these are a representation of the little wrigly things you see in water butts or buckets in the garden, they are the larva of the Mosquito.
These are usually fished within a foot or so of the surface ( but not always )
Emergers , these are to imitate the smaller nymphs as they hatch from their shell in the surface film , this is often a deadly pattern.
Brings us to Dry flies , this is the time when the hatched flies are on the surface, or when terrestial flies get blown onto the water as happens with the crane fly ( daddy longlegs ).
So as you can see , colour is the last thing to worry about . And this is without touching on Lures , Boobies, Streamers , Muddlers . Zonkers and on and on.
If you’re a member of a library , ask them to get some books in on trout flies , so you can see whats what. If you can get a copy Robson’s Guide is recomended but I’m not sure if it’s still in print.
Everything above Daddy Longlegs can be fished on a floating line or on really hard days an intermediate with the exeption of the dry fly that needs to be fished on the floating line.
If I can give you anymore help email me.

I’m looking at real estate in Europe (anywhere in Europe). I need a spot for good fly fishing. If anyone knows a good place to live near these places, I’d love to hear about it. Thanks a bunch!

For fly fishing, I recommend any water where you have enough room to cast. It takes a bunch of room with fly fishing gear. Also, it totally depends what species you are after. I hear France has great fly fishing, but I do not know firsthand.

I know it it probably crazy fly fishing for rainbows this time of year but i just got a new fly rod that i want to try out. Im fishing in the green river. Just name a fly that might get me something this time of year. Thanks for the help!

im a beginer fly fisherman and i love all kinds of fishing. i think i know the 4 top patterns for each type of flys ( dry flies, wet flys, nymphs, and streamers) but i would like to know what other people think. please send links and please i would like to see alot of personal favorite patterns.

I’m from Montana and tied professionally a million years ago when I was in high school. My pick Royal Wulff, Royal Humpy, Elk Hair Caddis, and any hopper pattern for dry flies. For wets, all you really need is an Emergent Sparkle Pupa. Nymphs: Hare’s Ear, Prince, Pheasant Tail, and all three in bead head (I get extras here because I was short on the wets). Streamers: Wooly Bugger, Muddler Minnow, Muddler Marabou White and Black.

The most fun I’ve had is dragging a Yellow Marabou Muddler across the top of really high muddy water. The browns would come right of the bottom and smash it like you’ve never seen. Some would come two feet out of the water after it.

My father and I are going fishing at the Salt River here in Arizona. We don’t fly fish, and would like to know how, and where to go to catch some trout? Also, will the water be moving to fast for a bobber? Or even fishing off the bottom? Thanks so much, any info will really help!

I had my best luck floating crickets and crawlers with size twelve hooks under a clear float and 2lb test leader. lures catch up on rocks all the time, I don’t like to eat rocks. an lures are to dang expensive to be using to catch rocks. I have snagged many a radio from the summer tube floaters that lose em. good luck to you
